Our Story

In 1958, an ambitious and inventive entrepreneur named Jack Gray founded what was then Modern Services in Battle Creek, Michigan. In many ways, Modern Services was a typical staffing firm; its focus was on placing engineers for contract assignments at local employers. But from the start, as the name implied, Jack and his staff were committed to new ideas, new ways of doing things. The goal, then and now, was to not only provide traditional staffing support but to pioneer new services, all while putting the right people in the right positions.

Charting a new course with Managed Services

Over the decades that followed, the company moved beyond its engineering base to become a leader in placing candidates in clerical and administrative positions. And from there, we saw explosive growth in industrial temporary staffing.

In the 1990s, current CEO Mark Lancaster joined us, and our robust and growing company—now known as Employment Group—entered a new chapter when General Motors approached us about outsourcing some of its non-core business.

Lancaster and his team launched Employment Group Managed Services, our first move into high-value offerings. Meaning, we strive to work with like-minded companies who align with our values and mission. We believe in not merely acting as a service for our clients, but as a partner who can strategically come alongside with our workforce solutions.

“With managed services, we own the equipment. We hire and pay the managers and staffers, overseeing every facet of each operation. This frees employers to focus on their core businesses,” Lancaster said.

Taking things to the next level. With top companies.

The introduction of managed services and ongoing expansion in other areas fueled significant growth, particularly among industrial customers. Employment Group began working with an impressive array of companies that included Pfizer, Denso, and Stanley. We earned an exceptional reputation for hiring large volumes of highly qualified people for temp positions.

Soon, we could quantify our expertise with data that showed EG matched companies with measurably better employees. This invaluable database and our expertise drove the company’s growth into the new millennium.

Innovating again.
With Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO).

In recent years, Employment Group has evolved to become EG Workforce Solutions. At the heart of that evolution has been a continued commitment to growing and adding new services. Among the more critical and important: Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO).

With RPO, EG experts seamlessly integrate into your organization and work alongside company human resources personnel to attract, source, hire, and retain candidates for your mass hire needs. In the case of one of the leading Midwest retailers, for example, the EG RPO team handles all of the company’s recruitment needs for new store openings as well as existing store and distribution center hiring needs.

EG’s RPO formula has proved extremely cost-efficient for a growing list of companies. It’s a critical part of our business today.
