What's Your Interest?

Continuous learning and development are paramount to your career growth. Whether you’re looking to improve your skills, expand your knowledge, or reach your next professional milestone, investing in your career development is an essential part of moving forward. We’re sharing four reasons why you should invest in your career development.

Gain More Skills

There are some skills you’d be smart to invest in learning regardless of your industry: Excel, Microsoft Office, virtual meeting platforms, and data analysis are just some examples. You’ll also want to invest in other soft skills, including communication, public speaking, and problem-solving skills. These hard and soft skills stand out to your leaders, potential employers and could separate you from other candidates.

Make More Connections

Want to accelerate your career development? Always be connecting! Growing your network is more than meeting new people who can help you get where you want to go. Your network is so much more; it’s your relationships, opportunities, and support system that you can lean into and be held accountable to. Making more connections will also open up new opportunities to learn or find training you may not have known about otherwise.

Learn Something New

It seems pretty obvious, but it’s true! Investing in your career development will undoubtedly lead to you learning new things and grow as a person. Career development should be encouraged by your employer, but it might be something you have to take on yourself. It’s more than just an investment in your career; it’s an investment in your growth, awareness, and identity.

Increase Your Confidence

It stands to reason that the more skills you have, the more confident you’ll become in your role. You’ll become more confident in your own abilities and strengths. When you have more confidence, you’re more likely to take the initiative, be ambitious, and yearn to continue learning. As a result, others in the organization will notice this increase in confidence, and all that comes with it.

If you’re not learning and growing, you’re actually lagging behind. Make it a priority to invest in your career development. This investment will lead to more skills, more connections, more knowledge, and more confidence. This investment in your career will undoubtedly spill over into your personal life as well!

Learning, growth, and development are essential factors to employees finding satisfaction and engagement in their positions. The Covid-19 crisis has amplified the need for continuous learning and development due to how many changes and the need for new innovative ways to do things. We’ve seen how the rapid changes to the work environment landscape require deliberate, consistent, challenging, and ongoing learning. In short, if you or your employees aren’t learning something new – you’re not just standing; still, you and your business are actually falling behind.

Virtual learning is key.

Since in-person learning or physical events have been canceled and probably won’t be coming back until at least late 2021, video and virtual platforms for learning will be key for most organizations.

The benefits of virtual learning platforms are that many courses or webinars are free and on-demand! Having learning on-demand means you and your team will be able to fit in learning when it’s convenient to them or fits into their schedules.

Many certifications are also available for free or discounted prices. There are certifications in nearly every industry or field. Just make sure to do your research on which one(s) will be the most beneficial to you or your team.

Learning Goes Beyond Virtual

Relying on recorded video learning alone is not as powerful as in-person programs. If you have the capabilities, you as a leader should host workshops or lunch and learns that provide opportunities for your team to engage each other to deepen the learning. Maybe even invite an instructor to “Zoom in” and provide a live training or learning session.

To ensure video learning programs are worthwhile for your team, it’s necessary to incorporate other elements—like live learning sessions, assessments, accountability, social aspects, and acknowledgment.

If you want to do more than just give your people knowledge, and if you seek to turn to learn into action and action into results, you’ll need to build more integrated, interactive, and customizable programs that feature video without using solely using virtual learning in isolation.

The Covid-19 crisis has forever changed workplace trends and learning and development. To thrive and continue growing, forward-thinking companies are transforming their learning strategies to keep their employees not just skilled but also engaged with the company and their professional growth.

Just because you might not have a car or access to a reliable vehicle doesn’t mean this needs to stop you from finding work. There are ways to overcome not having a car while still maintaining the ability to get to and continue to go to work. We’re sharing five ways to find transportation even if you don’t have a car.

You Can Take Public Transportation

Perhaps the most obvious way, but still a great way to access transportation if you don’t have a vehicle. Many companies are even on or near, bus lines making the trip easy for you! Just make sure to do your research beforehand to make sure your workplace is accessible from one of the bus routes available to you. This information can be easily accessed either by speaking with your recruiter or visiting the bus line website.

Public transportation is also a more cost-friendly way to get from point A to point B than owning a car. Just think about it, you don’t have to pay for gas or car insurance!

You Can Use Ridesharing Apps

If public transportation isn’t an excellent option for you, consider using ridesharing apps like Lyft or Uber. These “on-demand” rides will be able to pick you up from wherever you are and then drop you off wherever you need to go. You can also usually find a ride 24 hours a day – ideal for anyone working 2nd or 3rd shift for example.

Ridesharing is more pricey than public transportation, so it may not be sustainable for you in the long-term, but it could be ideal for getting you to and from interviews.

You Can Carpool

Carpooling is another great option for finding transportation if you don’t have access to a vehicle of your own. You can find ways to carpool by speaking with other co-workers who live near you or finding carpool groups on social media.

In exchange for the ride, it’s common and considerate to offer the vehicle owner gas money, parking fees, or other expenses related to the commute you’d have. You might even offer to be the DJ for the commute!

You Can Bike or Walk

Depending on the distance and feasibility of the weather, biking or walking are also great ways to get to work even without a car. If you live in close proximity to the workplace, biking or walking are a great option – you get a chance to exercise and get fresh air before and after your shift.

If you live in an area where winter weather makes biking or walking an unrealistic option, you may want to look into one of the options we mentioned above.

While you may believe you must have a vehicle to get to work, that’s far from the truth. There are ways to find transportation, even if you don’t have a car. Whether it’s for the long-term or only temporary, using public transit, ridesharing apps, carpooling or biking, or walking to get to work are great ways to overcome barriers to transportation.
