5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Accepting a Job Offer
Hooray, you just got off the phone with the hiring manager, and they offered you the job! While it’s easy to get caught up in the moment of excitement and automatically say “yes,” take some time to reflect before you accept. Here are five questions you should ask yourself first to make sure the job will be the right fit for you and the company.
Does this job bring me closer to my career goals?
It’s time to be honest with yourself about this question. Where do you see yourself in your career in five years? What career goals have you set in place for yourself? Will this position bring you closer to those goals? If this position isn’t going to bring you closer to career advancement, it may be worth reconsidering if this is the job you should accept.
Do I support the company’s mission?
This might be one of the most important questions you ask yourself before accepting a job offer. If you can’t stand behind the company’s mission, the job is not right for you. You should have researched the company before interviewing and gotten a feel for what the company values during the interview process. If it didn’t feel right or it felt like the company didn’t hold true to its mission, it’d be best to decline the job offer.
Will I fit in with the company culture?
This is another essential question you’ll want to ask yourself. No one wants to dread going to work, and healthy company culture can combat those feelings of dread. Again, you should have gotten a feel for the company culture during the interview process. Does the culture show the company values its employees, mission, and ethics? Your new co-workers are people you’ll be spending a great deal of your time with, and so being able to “fit in” with them and the culture is something that will be critical to future success in the role.
Are there opportunities to grow and develop?
Who wants to be stagnant in their career? No one! Consider if the company offers you the ability to grow and develop yourself. You’ll get a feel for this from the company culture. Does the company promote from within? Are there opportunities for growing your skills or learning new ones? If you’re not going to have the ability to grow, the company probably isn’t going to be a great fit in the end.
Am I excited about this opportunity?
Finally, you should consider if you’re genuinely excited about the opportunity? After the initial thrill of the offer wears off, will you still feel motivated about the position? If you can honestly say you’re more excited about the offer than the job itself, accepting the offer might not be a great idea since you might feel stuck in a rut after the initial excitement fades. You should work someplace you enjoy, while you may not love going to work every day, it shouldn’t be something you dread. Carefully consider where the excitement is coming from before accepting that job offer.
