Customize Your Resume for Every Job Application

Even if you lack relevant job experience, you can build your resume up by thinking about different courses you’ve taken (whether in school or via online platforms), projects you’ve completed, internships, volunteering, etc. Also, think about how all of this relates to the job you’re applying for. Read the job description to know what seems to be the most important factors of the role. How has what you’ve done in the past related to this? How can you leverage what you have accomplished, outside a professional environment, to show you’re potentially a good fit for the role?

Customizing your resume for each job application will take longer than sending it out in mass, but the effort will pay off when you start getting contacted back by hiring managers. If you apply to jobs without much experience without customizing your resume each time, chances are low you’ll get much traction. You will be rewarded by putting in the hard work now!

Educate Yourself About Your Field

Become an “expert” by educating yourself about your desired job field. Do everything you can to learn about the ins and outs of your industry. What are the top trends? New technologies or processes? Start building your “field knowledge” by taking classes, attending workshops or seminars, doing online courses, getting certificates and diplomas, and if you have to, earn a degree.

Not only will this help you gain knowledge for the job, but also show your dedication and commitment. Employers and hiring managers will take notice of this; just make sure you highlight these knowledge steps in your resume as you apply for jobs!

If you want an additional leg-up in finding a job but lack much experience, consider working with a staffing agency. Working with a recruiter will help you access more job opportunities, save you time in your job search, give you resume and career advice, gain a job search advocate, and you’ll stay in their database until the right position comes along.

Don’t let a lack of experience keep you from applying for jobs you believe could be a good fit.
